Adjacency diagrams

Today I have started to acknowledge different spaces throughout Sheffield Hallam University and labelling them through an Flow Diagram, also known as an Interior Adjacency Diagram. Through this process of building walking I can begin to break down each of these areas into learning, meeting, circulation, eating, etc. to identify different environments which need to be indexed.

  1. Of course you’ve got to be looking at these relationships, given the discipline; but is it possible also to examine the adjacency of people in an organisation? How do senses of humour sit beside one another in a place and allow (or prohibit!) a sense of environment? Or do I really mean ‘ambience’? Spaces and surfaces are concrete (sort of) but perhaps laughter is viral…?
